Camp The Geauga County Parks

Camping out in Geauga Park District promises quality down time with friends and family, plus a chance to discover the beautiful natural resources in four different Geauga parks. The cost is $5 a night for county residents or $10 a night for out of county residents.

Big Creek Park, Headwaters Park and Chickagami Park all offer clean, well-maintained, reservable campsites in scenic locations. They include lean-tos, each with a fireplace in the chimney, which can accommodate up to five people, and tent pads, which provide comfortable, well-drained surfaces for tents.

The West Woods also contains two tent pads in primitive, off-the-beaten-trail locations.

Camping reservations must be made online at least seven days prior to the visit, or by phone before 4 p.m. the day of the reservation. No walk-in camping is permitted.

Music Of The Night Bike Ride

June 21, 8-10 p.m.

Join for a 6-mile round-trip bike ride along The Maple Highlands Trail with stops along the way, between Headwaters Park and Tare Creek Parkway. A naturalist will instruct on how to rely on sharpened sense of hearing to discover bird and animal life along the way. An electronic bat detector will also be on hand to amplify the echo-location signals sent out by bats as they hunt insects.

A bike or helmet light is recommended. The ride will only be canceled in the event of heavy storms; check the website or Facebook page if the weather seems questionable. Registration is not required.

Pollinator Week Programs

Prairie Plant Pollinator Promenade is June 22 from 9:30-11 a.m. at Frohring Meadows in Bainbridge Township. Enjoy a leisurely walk along the prairie trails while discussing the importance of pollinating insects, their association with blooming prairie plants and their amazing diversity.

Then, on June 23 from 1-2 p.m., join Cristin Smith of Nature’s Way Bird Products inside the air-conditioned West Woods Nature Center for “Native Solitary Bees: Beneficial Pollinators.” Learn about mason bees, leafcutter bees and similar insects as well as tips on planting and nesting resources designed to attract and increase their abundance. Plus, enter a raffle for a beneficial insect house and take home seeds to plant in the garden – all free. Registration is not required for either program.

Epic Firefly Adventure

June 29, 9-11 p.m.

Enjoy a good old-fashioned lightning bug hunt at Swine Creek Reservation in Middlefield Township. The program will kick off inside the lodge with a short, amusing presentation on firefly biology. Then, grab a net and head outside to capture enough of the elusive insects to fill a giant jar with light. Registration is not required.
