Adult and youth applications to participate in Geauga Park District’s 2019-20 controlled hunting program for white-tailed deer are now being accepted through July 31.

Controlled Hunting

Adult and youth applications to participate in Geauga Park District’s 2019-20 controlled hunting program for white-tailed deer are now being accepted through July 31.

Forms are available online or for pick-up at The West Woods Nature Center, Big Creek Park’s Meyer Center and Great Lakes Outdoor Supply in Middlefield.

All lottery winners will be notified and required to complete qualifications before the hunt.

Flea Market in the Woods

July 13, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Join Geauga Ohio Horseman’s Council for an annual favorite to peruse dozens of vendors selling treasures of all kinds at The West Woods in Russell Township. A portion of the proceeds from this event benefits Geauga Park District’s Bridle Trail Fund.

Elderberries: Paddling and Peddling in the Park

July 18, 9-11:30 a.m.

Join the Geauga County Department on Aging, University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center and Geauga Park District toe explore the water from kayaks at Headwaters Park’s boathouse. There will be three sessions of kayaking and a guided bike ride, followed by a picnic lunch and EZ Go Cart tours of the park. Register for the event online; sign-up for each kayak session will take place at the event. Seniors must bring their own bikes.

Park naturalists also lead Geauga Walkers hikes of active seniors year-round, a couple Tuesdays a month from 1-2:30 p.m. Upcoming hikes are: July 16 at Holbrook Hollows, July 30 at Swine Creek Reservation, Aug. 13 at Russell Uplands Preserve, Aug. 27 at Big Creek Park’s Woodin Road horse trailer parking lot, Sept. 10 at Orchard Hills Park and Sept. 24 at Veterans Legacy Woods.

Dragon-Hunting Van Trip

July 20, 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Dragonflies and damselflies are the insects of interest on the van trip and hike at Morgan Park,one of Portage County’s newer parks. Come explore the meadows, wetlands and surrounding habitats at Morgan Park for these amazing insects. Our species list will then be given to the Ohio Odonata Society for a survey currently underway. Registration is required.

Nights Out In The Parks

The free evening series features outdoor movies and scenic amphitheater shows.

Observatory Park hosts all three movies, shown on a giant inflatable screen under internationally recognized dark skies. Bring blankets and lawn chairs. Themed activities and free popcorn and lemonade begin at 8 p.m., and each film starts at dark. Geauga County Public Library’s Fun Bus is also on hand.

Come for “Harry Potter & the Sorcerer’s Stone” on July 27 and “First Man” on Aug. 10. As for live music, enjoy performances at Big Creek Park’s Frances S. Hall Amphitheater by Tom Todd on July 20 and Night Dawgs on Aug. 24, both from 7-8: p.m.
