Geocache Day

Even though Geauga Park District has been posting new geocache coordinates in each of its quarterly newsletters, participants have been clamoring for more. Now each season will also feature its own Geocache Day, like going on four treasure hunts at four different parks in a single day, with chances to win prizes.

Geocache Day: Winter is March 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Swine Creek Reservation, Lodge, 16004 Hayes Road in Middlefield Township.

Geocaching is an up-and-coming challenge activity that gets people outside using their GPS to help locate hidden caches. Seasonal Geocache Days will provide even more fun and practice with a GPS, as well as the opportunity to explore even more parks.

Upon registration – required by phone at 440-279-0894 – participants will be assigned a playing card that they’ll need to retrieve from each of the caches. The quest can begin any time during posted hours, but must end at Swine Creek Lodge between 1-4 p.m.

A complete set of instructions will be posted beginning March 1 on the park districts website.

Square Dancin’ For Tree Tappin’

Its time for the 25th annual old-fashioned square dance to celebrate Geauga Park District tappin season.

The Silver Anniversary Tree Tapper’s Ball takes place March 9 from 7:30-10:30 p.m. at Parkman Community House, 16295 Main Market in Parkman Township.

Returning to the ball is Bob Smakula, a professional instrument repairman and champion string musician from Elkins, W.Va., who has called 22 of the past 24 balls. Wild Spiles are tuning up to provide old-time string band music on fiddle, claw hammer, banjo, mandolin, guitar and bass. Steps will combine Appalachian-style square and New England-style line dances

Registration is open for the free event, limited to eight per registering party. Dancing is upstairs at Parkman Community House, which is not equipped with a ramp or elevator. Dress casually.
