On July 2, from 9 a.m. to noon, kids ages 6-8 and 9-11 will have separate adventures during Nature Explorers: Streamlife Safari. The forested stream of Swine Creek Reservation will provide a great environment for them to discover wildlife like crayfish, salamanders, rainbow darters and stonefly larva.
On July 6, from 9-10:30 a.m., families are invited out for a Frohring Meadow Meander to leisurely explore of the wide diversity of plants and animals that can be found here. Bring binoculars and field guides if you have them.
Also that day, join Geauga naturalists during an excursion in Lake County at Indian Point Park in Leroy Township for Hidden Gems: Amazing Freshwater Mussels. Filter-feeding mollusks can be found there and the program will be a river walk with footing that will be challenging, including submerged rocks, mud and varied water depths. Sturdy footwear or waders are a must.
Then, on July 7, from noon to 3:30 p.m., join Ohio Lepidopterist member Mark Rzeszotarski and naturalists for an annual census of butterflies and dragonflies at Swine Creek Reservation. Bring sunscreen, long pants and an appetite. The event is called Burgers-n-Butterflies, Dogs-n-Dragons because participants who catch a butterfly or dragonfly will be eligible for a free hamburger or hot dog.
And also that day, Timbertots: Peeking in a Pond will welcome children ages 3-5 with an adult into The West Woods to discover all the kinds of critters that live in and around the park’s ponds.
