GPD Summer Camp Promotion

Geauga Park District is offering half-off promotion for its adventure and space summer day camps. Now, when one buys a child a spot in one of the two new summer day camps, he or she will get half off the cost of admission for the same child in the other camp, a $75 value.

Registration for both camps is now open by contacting Denise Wolfe at 440-279-0894, but space is limited.

Age groups of 10 to 12 and 13 to 15 will trade between adventure and space themes each week from early June through early August, excluding the week of July 4. A registration fee of $150 per camp, with the exception of the half-off promotion, will cover the cost of all activities, travel and equipment associated with each experience.

Details on each camp, as well as summer camp calendars and waiver forms, can be found on the park district website.

For additional savings, Geauga County Job and Family Services is accepting applications for its 2013 summer camp and enrichment program, which provides low-income children in Geauga County with an opportunity to enjoy this experience. Funded solely through donations, last year more than 150 children were matched with a meaningful summer program or activity.

Foster children in the agency’s custody receive first priority; children who live with their family and are receiving social services, and children whose families are struggling financially, are also considered. For details on Geauga County JFS’s program, call Sara Shininger at 440-285-9141.

Geauga Park District and the Geauga Park District Foundation are grateful to Friends of CASA for KIDS of Geauga County for its chief sponsorship of the inaugural year of camps.

Tour The Colonies

Visit Amish homes to marvel at nesting colonies of purple martins and cliff swallows during a bus trip through Geauga County.

The Purple Martin and Swallow Colony Tour is June 8 from 9 a.m. to noon. Meet in Burton to load the bus; details will be provided upon registration.

The three-hour bus trip sets out with the goal of seeing all six species of Ohio’s swallows. Stops include a sand and gravel mine to see a colony of bank swallows, a bridge to see barn swallows, a barn to see cliff swallows, and rough-winged swallows wherever we can find them.

Registration is required. Bus fare costs $15.

The Mastery Of An Artist

The display of Florian K. Lawton’s work is so special, his son Ken, managing partner of the Florian K. Lawton Foundation, will be on hand to meet all who attend its opening, The Mastery of Florian K. Lawton: A Retrospective on June 7 from 7-9 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center.

Visitors will find a collection of some of Florian’s best nature-inspired artwork, as well as his outstanding Amish culture paintings and drawings, gracing the walls of The West Woods Nature Center’s Oak Room.

These will include examples from public collections and private collections, such as the Hiram College and Miller family collections. Of works sold during the length of the show, a portion of sales will benefit the Amish Heritage Center, Hiram College and Geauga Park District.

Light refreshments by Sara’s in Gates Mills will be served at the show opening, which is free to attend. Artwork will then remain on display daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through July 24.
