Christmas Tree Recycling

Once again the question arises, what to do with the tree after Christmas? The township will be helping with that again this season by providing a dumpster at the township park through mid-January.

Even though a grant for tree recycling is no longer available, the township wants to continue to provide this service to its residents. Universal Disposal has given Hambden a very reasonable rate for the dumpster and its removal.

No one will be able to assist residents with putting their trees in the dumpster; please do not leave them on the ground. Thank you.

Zoning Update

Zoning Inspector Darlene Welch wants everyone to know that over the summer, residents were having a problem with persistent salesmen, or transient vendors, approaching their homes. These vendors indicated that they had obtained a zoning certificate to allow them to sell door to door. This was completely false. This activity is not regulated by a zoning certificate of any kind.

Because the township was contacted for assistance with this problem, on Nov. 18 during a public meeting, township trustees passed a resolution to prohibit transient vendors in the community pursuant to the Ohio Revised Code 505.94. This does not apply to any person invited by the resident to sell, offer for sale or solicit orders for the delivery of goods or any person who represents any entity exempted from taxation. It also does not include an auction or an auctioneer company licensed by the State of Ohio.

The Geauga County Sheriff’s Office and the Geauga County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office have been notified of the passage of this resolution so if a resident is approached by an unwanted salesperson, he or she has the right to contact the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office and advise them of this situation.

From the Fire Department

2015 is nearly over and the fire department has been very busy this year. The kitchen and day room in the fire department has been improved with new cabinets and counter tops. The old stove was also replaced because it could no longer be repaired. It was necessary now that the station is staffed 24/7.

The parking lot has been expanded and leveled for better drainage. The work will be completed in the spring when additional gravel is added.

The parking area in front of the garage next door has also been improved. This garage stores the utility pickup truck, grass fire jeep, hazardous material spills trailer and lawn equipment. These improvements will make sure it is no longer necessary to park on the grass when visitors come to the fire station for an event, which also means no one will get stuck in the mud anymore.

Thanks to a grant Hambden received from the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, the fire department was able to get new cots for the rescue squads. These are “power cots” that raise and lower and have a loading system. It will help reduce back injuries for fire fighters and make a much smoother transition into the back of the squad.

The township is also very lucky to have several new paramedics as members of the department. These fire fighters have completed over one year of intense study to achieve this while continuing to work their regular jobs at the same time. Everyone truly appreciates their dedication and loyalty to the department. The fire department looks forward to continuing to serve its residents in 2016 and hopes everyone has a safe and healthy new year.
