International Overdose Awareness Day

Aug. 31

Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers, Inc. is participating in International Overdose Awareness Day, an annual global event held on Aug. 31 that seeks to create better understanding of overdose, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths and create change that reduces the harms associated with drug use.

This day acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have died or had a permanent injury as a result of drug overdose. In addition, the day also spreads the message that the tragedy of overdose death is preventable.

One way to prevent drug overdose is to properly dispose of prescription medications. In order to help manage the amount of excess medication and to aid in preventing prescription drug abuse, Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers offers Deterra bags at their Chardon office as a freeresource to Geauga County residents.

For more information about how to obtain the free resource, contact Matt Petersen, OCPS at mpetersen@lgrc.us or call 440-205-2672.

A new Alzheimer’s Association caregiver support group is starting at St. Helen Catholic Church, 12060 Kinsman Road in Newbury Township on Sept. 14. The group will meet the second Saturday of each month from 9-10:30 a.m.

The spiritually-based group is open to all and offers a safe place for caregivers, family and friends currently caring for persons with dementia to develop a support system. There is no charge to participate and all groups are conducted by a trained facilitator.

Alzheimer’s Association caregiver support group members exchange practical information on caregiving challenges and possible solutions, talk through issues and ways of coping, share feelings, needs and concerns and learn about community resources.

The new group is the second in Geauga County. Chardon’s St. Mary’s Church hosts a monthly evening caregiver support group on the third Wednesday from 6:30-8 p.m.
