Monday, March 30 was a cloudy morning, looking like another “hang wash in the basement” day. After two days of warmer weather, it seemed cool on Monday.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Jonas D. Yoder family in the passing of their son, whose funeral was on Monday. He died the evening of March 27.

With all the rain over the weekend, there were some basements that were flooded. Also, the neighbors had a pond in their field big enough the children could take a kayak ride on it.

Clarence G. Kurtz is still in University Hospitals in Cleveland having treatments for his leukemia. He is not allowed any visitors at this time due to the coronavirus. Even his wife was sent home.

Grass is greening up and would be big enough to cut once it dries off. That might give the children something to do while they are being home schooled. It might be a good lesson.

Having a grilled chicken and burgers with all the trimmings supper on Sunday night at Aden and Rosanna Troyer’s were Dan and Sylvia, Danny Ray and Betty and I. We sat on the patio for a while until the chills sent us inside.

Spring cleaning has begun. But, we need a nice sunny, breezy day to wash curtains, bedding, couch covers, blankets, rugs and all that goes with spring cleaning before the wedding season begins, which hopefully won’t interfere with the coronavirus.

We received the message that Mrs. Alvin Troyer Mary, of Brosius Road, died. We have not heard when her funeral will be.

Visitors with Ray and Judy Miller on Sunday evening were his brother, Joe and Saloma Miller and Christian and Sarah Hostetler. Rays recently moved down on State Route 88 from Shedd Road.

From Out of the Past

Farmers are busy getting ready to sow oats.

Amos, the only child of Andrew Gingerichs, died on Tuesday, April 5; age 1 year and 23 days. The funeral was held the following Thursday.

A son was born to Noah Bylers on Sunday. Also, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Simon Yoder.

We have had nice and warm weather for some time and plowing and sowing oats are in order. Today the weather changed to snow and covered the ground, but it soon disappeared again.

Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob D. Bylers, died on Tuesday night and was buried on Thursday, aged 16 years.

A child of Joseph Kurtz is very sick with typhoid fever, but is somewhat better at this writing.

The teacher urged his students to think before speaking.

“Always count to 50 before speaking,” he advised. “And if it’s something really important, count to 100.”

The next day, while standing next to the wood stove, he noticed all the children were watching him closely and moving their lips. After a few minutes, they all said at once, “Ninety-eight, ninety-nine, one hundred, your coat’s on fire.”
