Kindness Challenge

During the week of Jan. 26, students at Newbury Elementary School joined 2,193,284 students in 4,142 schools in 45 countries in the 2015 Great Kindness Challenge. It is a one-week challenge devoted to performing random acts of kindness.

Students participated in many fun activities throughout the week, including a spirit week. The week began with a kickoff assembly for the entire elementary school. Ronald McDonald spoke to students about being a kind friend to others. Students passed kindness bracelets to each other throughout the week when they caught someone performing a kind act.

As a school the student body decided that being kind to each other was not enough. The week was devoted to being kind to animals as well. Each class made items that were donated to the Geauga County Animal Shelter on Merritt Road in Chardon. Chew toys, blankets, cards, bedding and food were among the many items donated by the caring students at Newbury.

Students in each class voted for the student that they thought was the kindest Newbury student. Those students made the trip to the Geauga County Animal Shelter on Feb. 9 to deliver the donations with Principal Cyndi Tomassetti. The Animal Shelter was very grateful for all of the donations and took the students on a tour to see the dogs.

Overall, taking part in Kindness Week was a great experience and Newbury hopes to continue to make a positive difference in school, in the community and in the world.

Spelling Bee

On Jan.29, Newbury elementary and junior high school students in grades 4-8 participated in the annual district spelling bee. The event was hosted by elementary Principal Cyndi Tomassetti and judges were junior-senior high school Assistant Principal Anthony Forfia and junior high school social studies teacher Robert Fitz.

Congratulations to the winner, eighth-grader Sarah Perez, and alternate, seventh-grader Lucy Lubanovich. Sarah represented Newbury at the Geauga County Spelling Bee held on Feb. 10 in Chardon.
