- Car Safety & Car Assessments: Sept. 18, 11 a.m. to noon. Sponsored by UH Geauga Medical and Highway Garage, learn how to change a tire and what to do if the “check engine” light comes on or what to do in a car accident. Stay after class for a box lunch. UH Geauga Therapy Team will also be providing free car assessments from 12:30-2 p.m.; only 10 spots are available. Car assessment participants must attend the car safety presentation. Murder Mystery Lunch
Sept. 20, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Join us for a day of fun, food and mysterious mayhem at the “Class of ‘52” reunion themed murder mystery at Joey’s Italian Grille, 209 Center St. in Chardon. Doors open at 11 a.m., with a chicken parmesan lunch at noon. Enjoy the cabaret stylings of Paul Floriano throughout the event. Prizes will be awarded to the teams who correctly guess “whodunit.”
Cost is $35 for Geauga County seniors and $40 for registered out of county seniors. Registration deadline is Sept. 14.
Flu Shot Clinics
The Geauga County Department on Aging in conjunction with Giant Eagle and CVS will provide Geauga County senior citizens with their yearly flu shot at different senior centers. Call the individual senior centers to register.
Giant Eagle Pharmacy will offer flu shots at: Chagrin Falls Senior Center: Sept. 18, 10 a.m. to noon; West Geauga Senior Center: Sept. 24, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and Chardon Senior Center:Sept. 28, 10 a.m. to noon.
Giant Eagle Pharmacy accepts most major pharmacy benefits and some medical plans along with Medicare Part B. Bring all insurance cards and ID. For patients without coverage or vaccination benefits, the quadrivalent influenza out of pocket cost is $40.99 HD for patients ages 65 and older out of pocket cost is $66.99.
CVS Healthcare will offer flu shots at Middlefield Senior Center: Oct. 12, 10 a.m. to noon.
Sign-ups will be first-come, first-served in the hour one signs up for. Wear short sleeves and bring all insurance cards. Call one’s individual insurance provider prior to the date to verify coverage
Senior Trash Pick-Up Days
Senior citizens who live in one of the townships or city listed below and have unwanted items that need to be picked up at their homes may sign up for trash pick-up days.
Register with the Geauga County Department on Aging (GDA) by the cut-off day or earlier. Once registered, seniors can be placed on the trash pick-up roster. To receive trash pickup assistance, one must be 60 years of age or older and live in the township or city holding the pickup.
City of Chardon: Sept. 27 and 28. Register by Sept. 21.
Hambden Township: Sept. 27. Register by Sept. 20.
TheDepartment on Aging can no longer go into homes to pick up unwanted items. Refuse will be collected from seniors’ garages, out buildings and drives. There is a limit of 10 household items per home; small items may be consolidated in strong boxes.
For specific allowable trash guidelines or to register for the pickup, call the Department on Aging weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 440- 279-2129 or 440-279-2130. When signing up for pickup, please have a list of items that need to be removed.
Meal Delivery Drivers Needed
The Geauga County Department on Aging is expanding the Home Delivered Meal program in Chester Township and is in need of meal delivery volunteers.
The program delivers warm, nutritious lunches Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., to homebound seniors in the community.
Area agencies, organizations, churches and individuals 18 years old or older with a valid driver’s license, may volunteer. Training includes filing volunteer paperwork and a short orientation about the program. Volunteers can deliver meals on a weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or as needed/substitute basis.
