‘Start With Hello’ Program Feb. 8-12

Bullying and social isolation have been the leading causes of school violence and teenage suicide. Young people who feel isolated or mistreated by their peers may pull away from society, struggle with learning, social development and choose to harm themselves or others.

The Geauga County Juvenile Court is teaming up with local school districts and the Sandy Hook Promise Organization in its “Start With Hello Call-to-Action Week” to raise awareness about the negative impact of bullying and social isolation, educating students and the community about ways to reduce the risks of bullying, social isolation, violence and depression.

“Start With Hello” teaches students, grades two through 12, the skills they need to reach out and include fellow students who may feel socially isolated or disconnected, according to a juvenile court press release.

The program empowers young people to create an environment of inclusion and connectedness within their schools.

During the week of Feb. 8-12, Geauga County schools and the Geauga County Juvenile Court will join thousands of schools and youth organizations from across the country in this program that seeks to prevent the tragic results that can arise from excessive bullying and peer exclusion.

Sandy Hook Promise is a national, nonprofit organization led by family members whose loved ones were killed in the Sandy Hook School shooting. The group is focused on preventing violence in schools through education and identification of and intervention with at-risk individuals.
