Former West Geauga Schools Board of Education member Jackie Dottore and retired Cleveland Indian pitcher Len Barker have been appointed to the Geauga Park District Board of Commissioners.
Geauga County Probate Judge Tim Grendell announced the appointments last Friday afternoon.
A resident of Chester Township, Dottore was appointed to a three-year term.
“Jackie Dottore brings valuable public board service and financial stewardship experience to the park board,” Grendell said in a news release. “She will add a fresh, family-oriented perspective to the board.”
Barker is best known for pitching a perfect game in 1981 while playing for the Cleveland Indians. After retiring from major league baseball, Barker, his wife and three children settled in Chardon.
Barker will complete the open two-year term that ends Dec. 2017.
“Len Barker is an exciting addition to the park board,” Grendell said. “He appreciates the value of conserving Geauga County’s natural resources while providing Geauga County residents with opportunities to experience and enjoy those wonderful resources.
“He works with young adults and will focus on providing Geauga County youth more opportunities to experience our great county parks.”
Dottore and Barker will join Park Commissioner Bill Gertz on the three member board.
Leaving the park board is Mary Ruth Shumway, whom Grendell said has assumed expanded child protection program duties as an employee of the Geauga County Juvenile Court.
“I appreciate Mary Ruth’s hard work and dedication while serving on the park board,” Grendell said. “Mary Ruth’s willingness to redirect her energy and expertise to help Geauga County children through the court will allow the court to expand its child protective and rehabilitation efforts. Making this her priority will best serve the court and Geauga County families.”
