A two-car rollover Saturday morning at the intersection of state Route 608 and Chardon-Windsor Road in Claridon Township killed a Chardon man and injured a Windsor man and his passenger, according to law enforcement.

At 9:11 a.m. Aug. 16, the Chardon Fire Department was dispatched to a rollover crash with entrapment at the intersection, said Fire Chief Justin Geiss in a statement.

“While enroute, Burton and Hambden fire departments were called for mutual aid. Upon arrival, crews found two vehicles with heavy damage,” Geiss said. “Two of the victims self-extricated and a third was still in the vehicle. Two patients were transported to (University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center) and a third was pronounced dead at the scene.”

A 1996 Chevrolet S10, driven by Donny Grigsby Sr., 46, of Chardon, was stopped eastbound on Chardon Windsor Road and failed to yield from the stop sign. He was struck by a northbound 2019 Ram 1500, driven by Thurman Bitting, 69, of Windsor, according to the Chardon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

“Bitting and his passenger were transported to (UHGMC) with nonlife-threatening injuries. Grigsby Sr. was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the patrol said.

OSHP is investigating the cause of the crash, Geiss said, adding the Chardon Fire Department has been working closely with the Ohio Department of Transportation District 12, the Geauga County Engineer’s Office and Claridon Township Trustees concerning this intersection.

“Following the last fatal accident at this location, all representatives met and discussed options to make this intersection safer,” Geiss said in his statement, adding that according to ODOT representatives, the intersection is scheduled to become a four-way stop in six to eight weeks.

“The health, safety and wellness of our residents and all who visit is and shall remain our top priority,” the chief said. “Our condolences go out to all those involved in today’s tragic incident.”

Other agencies that assisted at the scene of the crash were the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office, Hambden Township EMS, OSHP Crash Reconstruction, Interstate Towing and Walters Towing, OSHP said.
