Spanish Honor Society Inductions
On April 12, the Berkshire Spanish Honor Society held its induction ceremony. The Berkshire Rigoberta Menchú Chapter inducted two juniors, five sophomores and one freshman. The students are Rachel Cindric, Brooklyn Pope, Aerowyn Dacek, Kylie Gleason, MaryJo Hernandez, Ryan Kessinger, Sophia Young and Lily Cook.
These students pursue excellence and have interest in their Spanish studies and exemplify service, citizenship and leadership in the school. The new inductees will join existing members in service activities next school year that both support the school and community.
Treasurer for a Day
Berkshire sophomore Aerowyn Dacek had the special opportunity to gain financial literacy skills and learn about the daily responsibilities of a county treasurer by participating in the Lake County Treasurer for a Day program on April 5. Aerowyn was selected from a list of student applicants at Berkshire High School to accompany Lake County Treasurer Michael Zuren and staff for the daylong real-life learning experience.
After a special swearing-in ceremony and proclamation, Aerowyn got a first-hand look at the primary duties of the county Treasurer’s Office, which include budget planning, financial reporting, record keeping and managing incoming and outgoing funds. The program itinerary included a tour of the Lake County Administration Offices and attending an office meeting that provided an overview of property taxes.
One of the highlights of the day’s activities was the opportunity to join 50 seniors from area schools to participate in a simulated financial literacy program called “Mad City Money” at Eastlake North High School. During the program, students competed in budgeting at different stations related to real life purchases such as housing, shopping and car transportation. Aerowyn was assigned to the car dealership station and had a first-hand look at the variety of personal budgets and how they affect auto purchases.
Youth Chorus Honor Choir
Berkshire sophomores Benjamin Rhoades and Sophia Young recently performed as members of the prestigious Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus Honor Choir at Severance Music Center in Cleveland. Ben and Sophia were selected from among student-musicians across the greater Cleveland area and were required to attend a full day intensive rehearsal with guest conductor Marie Bucoy-Calavan, from the University of Akron.
In addition to the rehearsal, Ben and Sophia attended multiple optional rehearsals leading up to the event and worked individually with choir director Sean Eppler, in preparing for the challenging music they would perform. Mr. Eppler describes the concert as one of the best he has had the pleasure of attending.
