First-Graders Explore Body Systems
First-graders have been busy learning about the different body systems in the Amplify curriculum’s knowledge segment. They have explored the skeletal, nervous, circulatory, digestive and muscular systems. Through hands-on activities, they’ve crafted models of a working lung and stethoscope, explored bones, conducted experiments revealing the inside of the digestive system and how food is processed and constructed a working model of hand muscles.
The teachers are always excited to bring real world learning into the classroom and shared how proud they are of the students for taking their learning to the next level in the classroom and at home. Students also included and taught their families. Some even searched their properties for bones and brought them back to school for further study. These project-based learning experiences perfectly exemplify Berkshire’s commitment to the 5 Cs.
Memory Project
Berkshire High School Art III/IV students recently participated in the Memory Project as they created portraits and identity art for orphaned children of Colombia. The goal of the program is to build understanding among youth and connect people facing challenges around the world. Students were paired with Colombian children who will receive their personal artwork created by Berkshire students. It will be an uplifting gift and the students took great pride in creating these works.
Longo Scholarship Recipients
Berkshire High School seniors Evania McCandless and Sofia Szilagi have been named recipients of the annual Longo Homecoming Scholarship. Both students were recognized during an assembly in the school gym on Sept. 22.
The Longo Homecoming Scholarship Fund is made possible through the generosity of Paula Boykin, a Berkshire High School graduate and the school’s first homecoming queen.
All graduating seniors were asked to respond to a prompt asking them to identify a critical issue in today’s world and ways to address it. The list of topics included diversity, social media, inequality, immigration, artificial intelligence, abortion, Founding Fathers and more.
Boykin commented, “We are so impressed with what’s coming out of your senior class students…they have a lot of thought-provoking ideas and are all extremely articulate. As a result, we have decided for the first time to award two first place scholarship awards to these impressive young ladies. Congratulations!”
