Doctor Day
Berkshire first-graders in Mrs. Girdler’s class recently participated in a highly hands-on lesson that culminated in “Doctor Day,” where students pretended to be doctors after studying the human body unit.
Over the last several weeks, students learned about the systems of the body, how germs spread and how bones and muscles move. Then, they applied their knowledge to a morning of exploration and discovery in the castle-turned-operating room. Students dressed up in scrubs, hats, gloves and masks and were even equipped with their own stethoscopes and personal doctor ID badges as they traveled to seven different stations that reflected what was learned in the knowledge class.
Stations included giving their partner a checkup, human body puzzles, Body Bingo, the classic Operation game, treat the patient math game and pin the part to the body game. At one station, students enjoyed a sweet syringe treat comprised of Jello that looked like real blood.
Special thanks to the six parent volunteers who helped run each of the stations and the individuals from the medical field who joined in and explained the tools used in hospitals and described what each body part does inside the human anatomy.
One student stated, “It was the best day ever!” Berkshire Local Schools is dedicated to helping even its youngest students explore career pathways at a young age while learning what keeps bodies healthy.
