Burton Elementary Accepts 50 Book Challenge

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cleveland State University by celebrating reading. Reading well is the single greatest contributor to academic success and lifelong learning. Help CSU celebrate 50 years and launch the next 50 by encouraging children to read.

All children in grades three and under in Cuyahoga County and those attending Center for Excellence and Innovation member districts outside of the county can meet the 50 Book Challenge by reading (or being read to) at least 50 different books between Sept. 19 and May 1. There will be exciting events, activities and recognition for kids who meet the challenge.

Students are encouraged to read and visit the library. Ask a librarian to recommend a good book or ask a friend or teacher. Keep track of the book titles by making a list, using the Goodreads App or by visiting Goodreads.com. Submit one’s list according to directions on the website.

Parents can visit the website for lists of award-winning books or the current information on reading and literacy. Learn how to help one’s child grow to be a great reader. Host a Family Literacy Night at one’s school or organization.

For more information about the 50 book challenge, special events and special “read along” videos, visit www.50bookchallenge.org. The website will go live on Sept. 19 to coincide with the 50th celebration kickoff by the university.

Volley For The Cure Sept. 23

Volley for the Cure was started by two friends in 2006 to bring awareness to breast cancer. A Volley for the Cure match is a regular season high school volleyball match that is designated as an awareness and fundraising match. The goal is to pack the stands with pink. Players, coaches, parents and schools are encouraged to get involved.

Fundraising generated through a Volley for the Cure event will be donated to the local Susan G. Komen for the Cure affiliate, working to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.

Early detection saves lives in the fight against breast cancer. By encouraging early education and awareness for the young women participating in Volley for the Cure events, the team and school are working as a community towards the future and towards a world without breast cancer.

There will be a Chinese auction, bake sale and other fun events, including a 50/50 raffle.

T-shirts are on sale through Sept. 12 during lunch periods in the high school cafeteria. All shirt orders must be pre-paid and the cost is $10 each. Students may pick up their T-shirts the week before the game. Other orders may be picked up at the door the evening of the game. Wear the T-shirt to the game on Sept. 23 and get in free.
