Operation Christmas Child

Spanish Honor Society members partnered up in the fall to put together gift boxes for less fortunate children around the world. It is a service project that will bring happiness and fun surprises to needy children.

The students started with a shoebox and then filled it with little gifts for either a boy or a girl. The students picked from three age ranges: 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14 years old. The shoebox was then wrapped in Christmas paper.

The 30 members of Spanish Honor Society packed 12 boxes. In the individual boxes they included small gifts like Nerf balls, dolls and yo-yos. They also included school supplies and hygiene items. Some students even wrote a small note in Spanish and placed it inside the box.

Sra. Rea dropped the boxes off and soon young children around the world will be getting their packed shoebox gift.

Rotary Donation to BES

On behalf of the Burton-Middlefield Rotary Club, Rotary President Tom Blair will be presenting four E-Beam interactive displays along with four 55-inch HDTVs to Berkshire Elementary School on Nov. 20 at 9 a.m. The equipment will allow teachers and students to interact with projected images on a white board, or in this case, HDTVs.

The project will impact the students in the Berkshire School District for years to come. Funding for the project came from Burton-Middlefield Rotary and Rotary International’s matching grant funds.

The Rotary Club of Burton-Middlefield has for many years supported Rotary’s international work as well as projects like this in the local community. The international work has included educational infrastructure projects, similar to the E-Beam one at Berkshire, in a rural part of Patagonia, Argentina. The projects totaling almost $100,000 in Rotary matching grant funds supplied basic computer equipment to support education and equipment to support school attendance and physical education in these rural areas. Rotary continues to emphasize education as one of six primary areas of focus in both its international and local community work.
