Area Businesses Visited

On May 20, the Berkshire Junior-Senior High School eighth-grade class visited area businesses to learn about careers. The trip included visits to Troy Innovative Instruments, Great Lakes Cheese and University Hospitals.

The students were taken on a tour of Troy Innovative Instruments by machine operators and engineers who explained what they do and how the machines work. The company creates medical implants.

At Great Lakes Cheese, everyone learned about the cheese making process and how the finished product is distributed nationwide to vendors and supermarkets.

University Hospital doctors, nurses, radiology staff and EMTs conducted a mock emergency room drill. After the drill, staff members explained their roles and highlighted the different jobs they perform in the hospital.

The school thanks these companies and the Geauga Growth Partnership for offering this opportunity to Berkshire students.

Project Based Learning

Mrs. Girdler’s and Mrs. Zembower’s first-grade class at Ledgemont Elementary conducted an ice cream experiment using project based learning as their guide. The students worked in groups of four and started with the driving question: How can we create a new flavor of healthy ice cream for kids?

The groups had written their recipes earlier and then met to discuss how they would start. The ingredients were laid out for each team to use for its own recipe. Once the students were ready, each group took what it had created and poured in the blender. Students had a taste to see if they liked what had been created. After the tasting was finished, the students started writing in their notebooks about what they had learned.
