Golf Balls Drive Cars
Golf balls take the driver’s seat in a middle school science lab designed to help students understand Newton’s Laws of Motion. Sixth-graders took over half the gym on Feb. 23 to see how far golf balls could push toy cars. The golf balls were connected to small metal arms so they could swing. Students then pulled the balls back and let them go at four different angles to see how the various distances altered how far the car traveled once the golf ball hit. Students swung the ball from each angle three times, and then did the experiment again using a weighted golf ball to see how that affected distance. Students then took the average of their trials to come up with a final calculation to measure how mass affects velocity.
What’s Growing On The Door
Mr. Ben Clutter’s College Credit Plus Biology class wondered how many germs are on surface of the office door at CHS, so members of the class swabbed the door recently and then grew cultures to see what kind of bacteria may be growing there. In addition to the bacteria, students also cleaned the door with three different agents – bleach, mouthwash and antibacterial wipes – and then swabbed the door again to grow cultures demonstrating which method best removes the bacteria. Students are still putting together their final analysis, but an early review of the cultures seemed to show that the anti-bacterial wipes provided the best defense against germs.
Ohio Lottery
Third-grader Emily P. was selected as an Ohio Lottery Partners in Education Academic All-Star for the month of February. The program recognizes students in grades K-12 who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, community involvement, citizenship and leadership in and out of the classroom.
Emily was nominated by teacher Mrs. Melissa Cardinal who says, “She is very bright and sets an excellent example for her peers because of her dedication to achieve. She constantly displays appropriate and dependable behaviors.”
Emily currently holds a 4.0 GPA, is the district’s spelling bee champion, plays rec soccer, basketball and softball, and participates in Girl Scouts. Only one student from each of the Ohio Lottery’s nine regions is chosen to receive the honor each month.
