Insect Development

Kindergarten students in Mrs. Lawrence’s classes got up close and personal with bugs during a recent science lab. Students compared various insects like bees, ants, and ladybugs in their early stages to their adult stages to see how they grew and changed over time. While some insects looked fairly similar from one stage to the next, others changed dramatically and students were very surprised to see the transformations.

STEM Career Fair

Science, technology, engineering and math took over the halls at CMS May 18. Sixth-graders once again lined the halls to give their presentations on STEM careers.

Students are required to research a particular career of interest in the science, technology, engineering or math areas and create a display, give a presentation to staff and dress as a professional from that career. Parents were also invited to come in for the presentations.

Some of this year’s represented professions included a construction worker, 3-D animator, marine biologist, STEM teacher, automotive designer, special effects technician, physician and veterinarian – including one student who brought in a live rabbit as part of his display.

8th-Grade Finance Fair

Eighth-graders at CMS got a real good “cents” of budgeting in the real world recently thanks to the Real Money, Real World finance program sponsored by The Ohio State University. Students start the fair with a career and salary, then visit several stations where they use their income to budget and pay for items like mortgages, cars, utilities, groceries, technology, clothes and other everyday expenses. Nearly every student walks away from the finance fair a little shocked and surprised by his or her financial situation. Thank you OSU and Mr. Cappelucci for hosting the event.

CIS Science Day

Science Day is always a big hit for Cardinal’s K-2 students. Each class gets a turn to visit CIS where there are six stations set up to explore. Select fourth-graders assist in manning some of the stations to teach the younger students how each experiment works and what the end result should be.

Students looked at pond critters and larvae under the microscope; discovered the weight difference between lighter warm water and heavier cold water; watched “The Machine,” where many different simple machines moved a golf ball from place to place; used a 16-foot lever to lift a 40-pound bag of salt with ease; wired a simple circuit using a 6-volt battery and plug in wires; and created sound waves with tuning forks that were mounted in a platform so the vibrating forks with an ink pen on the end would swing across paper and make a sound wave on the paper.

Read Across CMS Day

Kindergarten and first-grade students made a special trip this week up to CMS where students from about 10 classes teamed up to plan a special reading event for them. The younger students traveled from area to area, where CMS students read to them and then worked with them to complete an activity related to the story. Every group ended their time with a special treat.
