Kindergartners Make Stone Soup
Kindergarten students help bring a popular folk tale to life in class. Students in Mrs. Courtney Dyer’s and Mrs. Ashley Derecskey’s rooms each read different versions of the old folk story “Stone Soup.” The story is essentially about three travelers that put water and a stone in a pot, boil it over a fire and then convince curious locals to contribute edible ingredients in order to make a meal that they and the townspeople can actually eat.
After reading the story, students then worked together to compare and contrast the different versions of “Stone Soup.” As an added bonus, teachers decided to help students make their own version of the soup and generous parents signed up to send in ingredients such as onions, carrots, celery, potatoes and tomatoes. There have been mixed reviews from students on how the soup tasted, but staff members said it sure did smell good.
