First Day Of School

Smiles and laughter filled the air around the district on Aug. 14 for the first day of school for the 2018-19 school year. Students at each building were greeted by several familiar faces, as well as some new ones, as they began their day.

Though it may seem early for school to be back in session, the Cardinal district has started school around the same time in August for many years, as have other local districts. When developing the school calendar, a variety of items must be accounted for, including following state requirements and teacher union contract guidelines.

For instance, Cardinal is required by law to have 178 student days and 184 teacher days. In addition, the district has a certain number of days it has to be in session each quarter/semester, and holidays and winter and spring breaks must also be taken into account.

The school district understands that the elementary and high school buildings can get warm. Administrators have considered pushing back the start date, however, when reviewing average temperatures in the month of August and September, only about a five degree difference was noted. Everyone is looking forward to a fun year.
