Science Lab Opens For Learning
The newly created Cardinal Local School District science lab is officially open for learning. The grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Aug. 22, where Superintendent Scott J. Hunt, current and former JES principals Michelle Nizen and Kelly Bearer, district science consultant Claire Zurbuch (Professor Z) and teachers Charlotte Torre and Barb Tropf used over-sized scissors to cut the ribbon in front of a small crowd of school employees and board members. On Thursday, teachers took students over to get their first look at the new space.
The lab is housed in the former Cardinal Intermediate School building, where Mrs. Torre’s former classroom has been completely renovated to accommodate the new learning area for students. In addition to storage space and an office for Professor Z, the space contains 10 lab tables with space for up to 30 students, a teacher’s lab table, projection screen, storage facilities, office space, a sink, ELMO projection screen and various new pieces of scientific equipment, such as microscopes and scales, to enhance experiments. Students will also have access to lab coats and goggles to wear, as needed, during their time in the lab.
All renovation, material, and equipment costs were completely covered by generous donations of money, time and supplies from Cardinal alumni, Dr. H. John “Bud” Visser, the CMS Student Council, George Fekete, Greg Bean, JES Parent Teacher Association (PTA), JES Principal’s Fund, Merryfield Electric and Rock Painting. Thank you to everyone who made this possible – we are so excited!
