Buckeye Boys And Girls State

A group of Cardinal High School students participated in the American Legion Buckeye Boys and Girls State events over the summer. Tyson S., Isaiah T. and Jonathan H. attended the boys event at Miami University and Camille C., Kailyn F. and Kaylee K. traveled to the University of Mount Union for the girls event. All of them were asked to participate in the weeklong event by CHS guidance counselor Jill DeRamo.

They admit they were unsure about the experience going in and it was overwhelming at first, but once they got there and settled, it was a rewarding experience for them. A couple students held elected positions, another was a state trooper, while others served on the governor’s cabinet or in state or local departments. Each accomplished several goals including passing laws and creating new programs to benefit their constituents.

The group is walking away from the experience with a greater appreciation for how government is run and a better understanding at what it takes to be successful, not just in that setting, but in daily activities as well. The students are inspired to use skills they learned to be better leaders at school and to reach for higher goals in their post-secondary futures. In addition, Kaylee was also selected to apply for the U.S. Senate Youth Program – where those selected spend a week in Washington, D.C., experiencing their national government in action. Congratulations to this outstanding group for their hard work.
