History Tour

The local community is the focus of third-grade social studies. Students study how their communities have grown and changed over time. Using primary sources like photographs shared weekly by Rick Seyer in his “A Look Back in Time” column in the Middlefield Post, teacher Barb Tropf led her classes on a history walk around downtown Middlefield.

They started by the former farm of Webster Johnson and then walked on the train tracks, which is now a bicycle path, to the center of town. Students compared pictures of each corner of downtown from the past to the present. They visited the Century Inn and The Depot at the Middlefield Historical Society. The last stop was the mural downtown. Students were able to recognize buildings from the past in the mural.
Thank you to the Jordak PTO who paid for photos to be enlarged to help students better see the changes over time. Also, thank you to Rick Seyer for sharing Middlefield’s history weekly. Miss Tropf used what she remembered from growing up in Middlefield and Mr. Seyer’s articles to help share the history of Middlefield with her students.

Second Grade Visits Holden

Second-graders became “tree detectives” on their field trip to The Holden Arboretum on Oct. 15. They learned about all of the parts of trees and what each part does for the tree. Although it was a rainy and chilly day, Huskie Pride was Arboretum-wide as students learned to use tools like a thermometer, anemometer and a magnifying glass.

Halloween Parade

Rain did not dampen the spirits of the Halloween parade at Jordak Elementary School. Even though students did not get to parade to Briar Hill, they still got to walk around the school and show off costumes to all of the other classes. Each class took a turn walking through the halls while the other classes watched. Batman, aka Superintendent Scott Hunt, even made a special appearance. There were some great costumes – everyone looked fantastic.
