Teddy Bear Lunch Day

Elementary school students had fun during Bring Your Teddy Bear to Lunch Day at Jordak on Oct. 10. Students were all invited to bring in a stuffed animal to have lunch. Students were served pancakes with a teddy bear smile and sausage and hash brown patties. The Cardinal Board of Education and administration were invited to come in and help serve the students and get a bite to eat. It was a fun time and the kids loved seeing visitors behind the serving line.

Fifth Grade Visits Holden

The fifth grade is participating in the Growing Students in Science program sponsored by The Holden Arboretum. Last week, students took a field trip there with the goal of learning more about the correlation between food chains and energy.

Students have worked on creating life support systems for survival in space in the classroom. Students were able to test some of their thoughts while at Holden. They dug through the forest floor to find decomposers and producers, and then proceeded to test what growing conditions are needed by those producers. The final lab replicates growing conditions in a partially controlled environment.

Wendy’s Heisman State Winner

Congratulations to senior Kaylee K. for being selected as a Wendy’s High School Heisman state winner. Kaylee is one of 7,500 state winners that were selected from an application pool of 42,000 high school seniors.
To be considered, students must hold a minimum 3.0 GPA, be proven leaders and role models within their schools and perform in a least one of the 47 school sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee or the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Kaylee says the process was rigorous. It took two weeks to complete the application, which included five essays.

Pumpkin Party

Kindergarten students in Mrs. Ashley Derecskey’s class spent some time in October learning about pumpkins. Students learned about the pumpkin life cycle, explored and labeled the characteristics of pumpkins (rind, stem, pump, and seeds), read stories, watched videos, and sang songs to learn all about the fruit. To finish up the lesson, students used their five senses to experience pumpkins – tasting pumpkin seeds and enjoying a slice of pumpkin pie. Great work!
