Students Attend STEM Conference
STEM coach Shaun Spence recently took middle school students Audrey A., Ethan D., Ana F., Ava G., Jackson P. and Dylan S. to the Energytech “Spirit of Innovation” STEM Education event at the I-X Center. The students were chosen due to their experience and leadership with the Future City program.
While at the event, students engaged in a question and answer session with National Aeronautics and Space Administration engineers from NASA’s Glenn Research Center. They also viewed exhibits celebrating innovators and technologies of the past, present and future. Exhibits focused on space, transportation, power and computers.
Engineers and representatives from companies and universities also had several booths set up for students to visit and ask questions. Cardinal’s group spent much time talking with a drone company to discuss a variety of ways drones are useful in times of danger, including natural disasters. The connections made will help the students prepare for solving this year’s Future City’s challenge – developing a power grid system that is resilient in natural disasters.
Second-Grade Leaf Lab
Second-grade detectives continue their sleuthing by identifying various leaves. Classes visited the science lab and with the help of Mr. Claire Zurbuch. “Professor Z” participated in an activity that helped them identify 10 different leaves from local trees. Students had to select one of the numbered leaves, compare it with those on a poster and then correctly identify and write down which leaf they had.
As a bonus, Professor Z also had a bottle of maple syrup and a container of acorns to see if the students knew which leaves went with those two items. The students did a great job comparing and identifying.
Veterans Assemblies
The school district had a wonderful time Nov. 12 celebrating its veterans. Both the elementary school and the high school held special assemblies honoring those who have served the country. Both included guest speakers who spoke about their military experiences. At Jordak, students heard from Ms. Angel King and at the high school, students listened to Mr. John Sudye. The band and choirs at both schools also performed various military selections. CMS students Audrey, Jenna, and Lilliana also read their Patriot’s Pen essays during the CHS assembly.
Thank you to all who organized the events and especially to those who have served the country.
