Simple Machines

Third-graders have been studying the six simple machines – lever, screw, wheel and axle, pulley, wedge and inclined plane – in weekly lab.

In a recent lab, they compared using one pulley or two pulleys. Students discovered that the more pulleys they use, the easier it is to lift the load.

The unit will culminate with a project. Students will go through the design process to design a machine that will solve a problem or make something easier to do.

Science consultant Claire Zurbuch (Professor Z) and STEM coach Shaun Spence will judge the designs. Winning designs will get to print their machine on the 3D printer in computer lab with Mrs. Sue Becker.

CVC Honors Choir

Just before Thanksgiving, several high school students were invited to participate in the annual CVC Honors Choir event. Trey M., Jenna B., Kyleigh H., Maddie S., Jonathon Z., Faith P. and Josiah K. all joined other students from around the area to put on an outstanding performance with a challenging repertoire they don’t normally see.

The guest conductor was Dr. Marie Bucoy-Calavan. Ninth-grader Josiah K. was chosen for a spoken solo in the men’s piece, “Sarah.” Bravo to all.
