Gingerbread Discovery
To culminate their Gingerbread Man unit, kindergarten students in Mrs. Courtney Dyer’s class decorated gingerbread cookies with frosting, sprinkles, chocolate chips and M&Ms. Throughout the unit, the class read different versions of the gingerbread man story, compared and contrasted the setting, characters, problem and solution. Students sequenced the events and came up with different endings for the story.
They had so much fun learning about gingerbread men and then decorating and eating their own creations. It was a great way to kick off the winter break.
Science Lab
Fourth-graders had a turn to explore in the science lab before winter break. Students were testing three variables in environmental changes – humidity, temperature and light. They used isopods (pill bugs) that teacher Mrs. Charlotte Torre collected outside her house for study.
Students were exploring plant and animal adaptations and their relationships with the environment in an effort to determine if a change in an organism’s environment is helpful or harmful to its survival. The organisms were placed in choice chambers to allow students to observe the pill bugs’ preference for environment when exposed to rapid change.
