Students in Mr. Kruse's eighth-grade social studies classes are studying Colonial America...

COLONIAL TIMES COME TO LIFE

Students in Mr. Kruse’s eighth-grade social studies classes are studying Colonial America.  They recently researched the geography, religion, economy and leaders of an assigned colony to create and present an advertisement persuading Europeans to settle in one of the American Colonies.

Students also participated in a mock New England town meeting to see how the roots of democracy were evident in Colonial America. Students were given a role and had to participate in a meeting of what the town should do with their money.

Mr. Kruse says, “I’ve found that this particular group loves participating in historical simulations, as it gives them a fun way to make the past come alive.”

HOMETOWN ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Cardinal High School senior Megan T. has received the Hometown Achievement Award from R+L Carriers. Megan received the award prior to kick-off of the varsity football game held at Cardinal on Sept. 30.

R+L gives the award to a student that demonstrates exceptional sportsmanship, outstanding character and a commitment to community involvement. School administrators say they selected Megan because she not only exhibits exceptional character, but also because she is an example of what makes the school and community great.

In addition to being on the cheerleading squad, Megan is also a member of Student Council, National Honor Society and Key Club and has held offices in all three clubs. She has also participated in both the fall play and spring musicals, is an active member of the student-run Cardinal News Network and volunteers her time assisting students in the special education classroom. Outside of school Megan says she is very active within her church and is involved in competitive cheerleading.

“When I heard my name called, I was so surprised,” says Megan. “I am honored and grateful for the recognition.”

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Congratulations to junior Virginia T. and senior Jacob R. on being named Ward’s Lawn Care and Landscape Company players of the week for Oct. 2.

Virginia is a member of the high school golf team – she shot a 92 at the Division II sectional tournament to advance to the district tournament, where she placed 11th.

Coach Travers says, “Two years ago, Virginia set a personal goal to shoot well enough as a junior to qualify her for the district tournament … she made that goal a reality. Virginia carries a 3.8 GPA, and she participates in Project Achieve, where she spends time with her peers who have developmental disabilities acting as a mentor while developing friendships. Virginia was also selected as an upperclassman to mentor freshman as they start their high school career.”

Jacob recently scored a school record eight goals in a win at Grand Valley. The eight goals place Jacob in seventh all-time in OHSAA history for goals scored in a single game.

“Jake was as aggressive as he has ever been,” said coach Mike Topalian. “He was very patient and waited for his shots. He found open spaces to work in and his touches were outstanding in the game at Grand Valley. I’m very proud of him. He has improved so much from last season. Jake leads by example on the field, letting his actions and results set a positive benchmark for his teammates to follow.”

Congratulations, Virginia and Jacob.

CRUSH CANCER SOCCER GAME

Everyone was a winner at the Oct. 10 Crush Cancer varsity soccer game. The evening began with recognizing the local youth soccer teams and celebrating our seniors at their last home game of the season. Senior players were recognized, along with their parents, prior to the start of the game.

In addition, the game also served as a fundraiser for Hawken Hunt, the 9-month-old nephew of coach Mike Topalian battling leukemia. Nearly $2,000 was raised for Hawken and his family to assist in covering medical expenses.

Thank you to everyone who participated, including the visiting soccer team, the Brookfield Warriors. The night was a success.
