Jump Rope for Heart
Students at Jordak Elementary School and Cardinal Intermediate School are jumping at the chance to fight heart disease and stroke, the nation’s number one and number five killers, respectively. On Feb. 1, Jordak and CIS hosted its third annual Jump Rope For Heart assembly. The assembly helps kick off the program so the schools can raise money for the American Heart Association, which funds lifesaving heart and stroke research and community and educational programs for our youth.
Jump Rope For Heart teaches students how physical fitness benefits the heart and shows them that volunteering can be a fun and positive experience for the whole community. The need to educate children about the importance of physical activity couldn’t be timelier. According to recent studies, about one-third of children ages 2 to 19 are overweight and obese.
“By including physical activity into their daily routines, kids can significantly reduce the onset and burden of heart disease,“ said Lauren Eberhard with the JRFH campaign. “By raising money through Jump Rope For Heart, we are preventing heart disease and obesity for the next generation of Americans. Kids are literally jumping into a heart healthier life while becoming passionate about raising money for other kids with sick hearts.”
For 38 years, millions of students have jumped rope and learned about heart health and how nutrition and physical activity can help prevent heart disease and stroke. Jump Rope For Heart is co-sponsored by the American Heart Association and SHAPE America-Society of Health and Physical Educators.

Family Fun Fest Success
Family, fun and developing a passion – that was the goal of Cardinal’s first Family Fun Fest, and thanks to the help of local organizations, churches and musicians, the event was a huge success. Cardinal Middle School opened its doors to the community on Feb. 2 for the event.
Inside, attendees could find everything from food, music from local musicians Will Collens, Revelation Road and Big Jul Green, and information from local organizations on how to get students active and involved. Midwest Native Skills was on hand to demonstrate pioneer era survival techniques, the YMCA had games and vouchers, Hands on Museum had an interactive display, and Scouts, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Middlefield Library and Geauga Parks all had information to share. Thank you to everyone who helped make the event a big success. Cardinal looks forward to doing it again next year.
