GCCTM Math Contest
Fifteen Cardinal Middle School fifth and sixth-graders gave up their free time on the morning of Feb. 18 to represent their school in the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics competition held at Garfield Schools in Garrettsville.
Teams of four contestants practiced twice a week for a month leading up to the competition. Events included problem solving, mental math and the construction of figures.
“Students found that along with math knowledge and reasoning, teams needed dedication, communication and cooperation to do well,” says Melody Barber, Cardinal gifted coordinator. “We are proud of their efforts!” Competitors included 5th graders Allison B., Emma G., Jamie M., Logan S., Lillian K., Liliana M., Anna L. and Ryan N. Sixth-graders were Tim M., Jenna O., Nathan L., Audrey A., Owen V., Ava G. and Ana F.
First Grade Research Projects
First-graders have been working hard on research projects for the last month. Students had to pick their own animal and then conduct research picking books from the library and using the Internet. Students then created a book all about their animal, presenting facts with the help of a visual aide such as a poster, toy or diorama.
