Students Help Read Millions Of Books
Cardinal third- and fourth-graders helped read 3,719,043 books during the nationwide Renaissance Learning Read Quest event March 3. Cardinal students joined thousands of others across the country who spent the day reading books and nonfiction articles and then completed quizzes on what they read. Renaissance tracked the number of quizzes taken to determine the total for this year’s event.
Read Quest gives students valuable reading practice. Teachers also allow them to wear pajamas and bring pillows and blankets so they’re comfortable during their daylong reading quest. Students go to great lengths to find their perfect reading spot.
Rotary Speech Competition
Congratulations to Cardinal High School students Brendan W., Kailyn F. and Victoria M. on their efforts in the Burton-Middlefield Rotary Club 4-Way Speech Test competition Feb. 22. The trio were three of six high school students to compete.
Students had to speak about an ethical issue that they applied to the following four questions: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? and Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Some of the topics this year included the negative impact of drunk driving, benefits of the integration of students with multiple disabilities in the public school setting and the positive aspects of interracial or multicultural adoption.
Victoria and Kailyn came in second and third places, respectively. Congratulations to all of the competitors.
First-Grade Science Experiment
Thanks to a science experiment with Mr. Z, first-grade students in Mrs. Wells’ class learned that approximately 71 percent of the Earth’s surface is water-covered.
Last week, Mr. Z visited students in the class and took turns bouncing a blue rubber ball to them. Mr. Z had drawn each of the Earth’s continents onto the ball with the unmarked space representing water. Each time a student caught the ball, Mrs. Wells would record if their thumb was touching land or water. The theory was that students should catch in water more than on land.
The end result was that students had twice as many catches in water than on land, thus proving the theory and demonstrating that there’s more water than land on Earth.
