Q and U Alphabet Wedding
The Chardon Early Learning Center’s annual Q and U wedding was held on Nov. 17 in the school gymnasium with kindergarten students Ellie Hoffmeister and MacRae Paterson playing the roles of the two matrimonial letters and Superintendent Mike Hanlon officiating the event. Tiny Toppers students and staff attended with much enthusiasm, decorated as letters of the alphabet with canned goods in tow as wedding gifts — for later delivery to a local food bank.
CELC Principal Andrea Ryan stated, “This is always a special event for the students. Food Service Assistant Denica Talty made special cookies for the reception.”
Chardon Presents at OSBA Conference
Superintendent Mike Hanlon, Assistant Superintendent Ed Klein and Treasurer/CFO Deb Armbruster served as learning session speakers on Nov. 13 at the Ohio School Boards Association 2023 Capital Conference and Trade Show. The Nov. 12-14 event, held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, is Ohio’s premier professional development conference hosting over 7,000 board of education and school district administrators annually.
In the area of Chardon Schools finance, Dr. Hanlon and Mrs. Armbruster spoke on how in each of the past three years the district earned four-star ratings — the highest achievable — in the Ohio Auditor of State’s Star Rating System (StaRS). While going green, the district simplified record requests; achieved public transparency; improved time management and organization; and reduced clutter, creating a safer working environment.
Science of reading success in Chardon Schools was presented by Dr. Hanlon and Dr. Klein, outlining the process and system the district uses to reach all readers, with the outcome of higher student achievement on literacy assessments in grades 3-7 over the past four years.
A Fair School Funding Plan update was provided by Dr. Hanlon, North Coast Shared Services Alliance Executive Director Ryan Pendleton, Perrysburg Schools Superintendent Thomas Hosler II, and Jackson City Schools Treasurer Jared Bunting. The update encompassed an overview of recent changes in the model and what’s ahead. The Fair School Funding Plan continues as Ohio’s new school-funding model.
