BOE Oaths of Office
A warm welcome to the district’s three newly elected board of education members — Karen Blankenship, Andrea Clark and James Midyette — each of whom was elected this past November to serve a four-year term from January 2024 through December 2027. Mrs. Blankenship is embarking on her fourth term, while Mrs. Clark and Mr. Midyette are new to the Chardon BOE.
Oaths of office were taken by all three members at the Jan. 4 organizational meeting wherein the board also elected its 2024 president and vice president — Karen Blankenship and Todd Albright, respectively.

Food Service Director Retires
Congratulations to Food Service Director Josi Culliton on her retirement, effective Jan. 1, after over 30 outstanding years of dedication to Hilltopper students and staff. Mrs. Culliton was formally recognized by the Chardon Board of Education at the Dec. 11 regular board meeting with a resolution of recognition.
Mrs. Culliton, a Chardon High School alumna ‘81, stated in an interview for the district’s newsletter, “It has truly been an honor to have been employed by Chardon Local Schools over the past 30 years. The pleasure of witnessing the continued growth of the community as generations of children become adults has been amazing. Wherever life takes me, the community of Chardon along with Chardon Local Schools will forever be a part of who I am.”
New Food Service Director
A warm welcome to Brett Schauermann who took the reins on Jan. 3 as the district’s new food service director. Brett was approved by the Chardon Board of Education at the December regular board meeting.
Superintendent Mike Hanlon stated, “Brett brings to our district a wealth of experience he developed in a similar role in the Fort Worth Independent Schools in Fort Worth, Texas. The Northeast Ohio region returns him to his roots where he attended Mentor Schools, Lake Catholic High School and Kent State University. We are pleased to have him aboard our administrative team.”
Free Harmony Holiday Tour
As is tradition, Chardon High School’s Free Harmony show choir hit the road this past holiday season to spread holiday cheer throughout the community.
The ensemble kicked off its community tour with the traditional tree lighting on Chardon Square on Nov. 30 and progressed to its 30-minute program on Dec. 4-5 for several community organizations and groups, including Rotary Club of Chardon, Geauga Retired Teachers Association, Ohman Family Living at Holly located in Newbury, Heather Hill Care Communities located in Chardon, The Residence of Chardon and Jennings at Notre Dame Village located in Chardon.
Special thanks to Chardon Schools bus drivers Daniel Marsh and Karen Speck for ensuring successful transportation to and from the community events.
