Senior Orator Advances to Districts
Chardon High School senior and Ohio Speech and Debate Association competitor Charlotte Jons finished first in the program oral interpretation event at the OSDA 16th annual Solon Tournament at Solon High School on Jan. 27, advancing her to the district level of competition at Olmsted Falls High School on Feb. 3 to vie for a state-level qualification.
Jons is an accomplished, long-running OSDA competitor of the CHS speech and debate team, and previously for Chardon Middle School. Her 2023 achievements included clinching the OSDA state championship title in POI and qualifying for the National Speech and Debate Association’s POI event at the national level of competition.
For the 2023-24 season, Jons curated a POI piece on the purpose and complexities of womanhood.
Coach Amy Roediger shared that she is proud of the work Jons has put in and the skills she’s gained as an OSDA competitor, adding “I am thankful that Chardon High School has supported her as she competed for the last seven years.”
As a senior approaching graduation this spring, Jons’ current itinerary includes college speech team auditions and interviews as she prepares to make a decision about her future in speech and debate/forensics at a higher level.
New Board Members in Training
Newly sworn-in Chardon Board of Education members Andrea Clark and James Midyette have been on the professional development trail since their Nov. 7 elections to the Chardon BOE, exemplifying the Portrait of a Hilltopper traits of commitment and continuous learning through participation in a series of training sessions.
Clark’s and Midyette’s most recent training pursuits have included participation in the Ohio School Boards Association’s Board 101 series held Jan. 27-28 at the Intercontinental Hotel and Conference Center Cleveland. The two-day program provided sessions on governance, collaboration, legal parameters, parliamentary procedure, meeting management, policy management, legislative understanding, district advocacy and school financing.
In prior months, Clark and Midyette attended a Chardon Schools new board member orientation session led by Chardon Schools Superintendent Mike Hanlon and Treasurer/CFO Deb Armbruster in December, as well as learning opportunities through the OSBA 2023 Capital Conference and Trade Show in Columbus in November.
Clark and Midyette were sworn into office at the Chardon BOE’s organizational meeting on Jan. 4 and are serving four-year terms that span through the 2027 calendar year.
