Honor Society Inductees

Congratulations to the 63 Chardon High School students inducted into national honor societies this winter. CHS seniors Taylor Holt and Nathan Suszynski and junior Thomas Cole earned the prestigious honor of induction into Auburn Career Center’s chapter of the National Technical Honor Society on Feb. 21, and 60 CHS sophomores and juniors were sworn into the National Honor Society on March 6.

NTHS and NHS are nationwide organizations that recognize students who meet and maintain specific academic criteria and are founded on the pillars of scholarship, community service, leadership and character.

At Auburn, Taylor and Nathan are second-year students enrolled in the school’s culinary arts and welding programs, respectively, while Thomas is a first-year student studying advanced manufacturing.

The three Hilltoppers were among over 50 Auburn students inducted during Auburn’s NTHS ceremony last month.

The CHS NHS ceremony, held in the school’s gymnasium, hosted retired teacher and coach Tim Armelli as the event’s inspiring keynote speaker. The ceremony saw the swearing-in of the 2024-25 school year student officers, induction of 60 new members, and presentation of senior honor cords to 60 class of 2024 students. CHS faculty member Casey Ptasznik serves as the school’s NHS advisor.

Makerspace in Action

The Chardon Schools professional development day on Feb. 16 hosted an itinerary of new learning opportunities for staff, including introductory sessions for Chardon High School faculty for the on-site Chardon Creativity Center makerspace.

C3, a joint partnership with Geauga County Public Library, opened in the fall and offers innovative equipment in the world of design and creativity, including 3-D printers, direct-to-garment printers, a large-format printer and a high-speed laser engraver.

CHS business teacher and Academic Decathlon coach Al Herner, engineering teacher Jason Hall and art teacher Erik Hauber are among the school’s staff who are fully trained and are already providing hands-on makerspace opportunities for their students.

Coach Herner stated, “Because our ACADEC curricular topic is Technology and Humanity this year, we decided it was the perfect year to make our own team T-shirts. We got to work understanding how to use the large-format printer and the heat press to print and apply designs, making one for the front and one for the back of the shirt. This was a much more economical way to get team shirts, it taught the students some very valuable skills, and it was fun.”

C3 is available to Chardon Schools classes during school hours and, by sign-up only, to GCPL patrons in the after-school / evening hours. The makerspace is located in the CHS building at the east end of the campus.

Special thank you to GCPL technology trainer, Mary Crotty, and information technology manager, Mike Pope, for their time and expertise in guiding CHS faculty through C3 introductory sessions last month.
