Students Learn from Local Leaders

Chardon High School students were recently afforded the opportunity to meet and talk with local leaders and connect classroom learning with real-world leadership.

Students have been learning about community leaders through their Unique Learning curriculum in the classroom. Upon completion of the lessons, the students reached out to local leaders in Chardon and set up appointments to meet with them.

On Sept. 25, the class met with Chardon Mayor Christopher Grau, Police Chief Scott Niehus and officer Jasen Elam at city hall.

Mayor Grau showed students around city facilities — speaking to them in both an upstairs meeting room as well as city council chambers. He discussed his role as mayor, the expansion of the Geauga County Courthouse, how city council meetings are run and how experiences in the classroom can relate to work outside of the classroom.

Neihus and Elam spent about an hour showing students around the Chardon Police Department, which included checking out the dispatch room, holding cells, offices, interview rooms, the evidence room, the booking room and the inside of a police cruiser.

District Hosts NY-Based Vocal Band

Chardon Local Schools was thrilled to host the nationally acclaimed vocal band Backtrack Vocals for several performances throughout the district on Oct. 3.

The five-person a capella band based in New York City made stops at Park Elementary, Munson Elementary and Chardon Middle School. The group not only sang several popular songs, but also encouraged students and staff to sing along, teaching those in attendance how to beatbox and harmonize.

Music teacher Samantha Puterbaugh organized the assembly with the Chardon Crescendo Club.
