Therapy Dog Visits
Chardon Schools is grateful to Margaret Bensi, a Kirtland resident, for donating her time to bring her therapy dog, Rosie, to visit with first-grade students at both Park and Munson elementary schools in February. Rosie’s work experience as a therapy dog has included visiting patients in memory units and hospice care settings. The recent trips to the schools marked Rosie’s first experiences in visiting schools and her first time working with children.
First-graders thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with Rosie. The visits were designed to accompany the students’ current reading unit on animals and people working together. Students learned about Rosie’s role as a therapy dog and also relished in taking turns reading to her in the classroom.
Auburn NTHS Induction
Congratulations to the following six Chardon High School students who were inducted into the Auburn Career Center Chapter of the National Technical Honor Society on Jan. 20: senior Logan Bjornholm (Culinary Arts) and juniors Matthew Kloski (Automotive Technology), Christine Masten (Cosmetology), Katarina Schneider (Criminal Justice and Security), Andrew Scurlock (Mechanical Technology Applications), and Alexander Zaccarine (Architecture Project Management).
Chardon Schools also commends the following two CHS students on their two-year status membership in ACC’s NTHS: seniors Hailey Richard (Cosmetology) and William Kurtz (Advanced Manufacturing)
The NTHS was established to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership and to encourage the development of character in all students at ACC. To be eligible for membership, a student must achieve and maintain an overall grade point average of 3.25 and a GPA for all ACC classes of 3.5.
NHS Induction
Chardon High School held its National Honor Society induction ceremony on Feb. 10, honoring 47 new members and recognizing the school’s 68 current members. NHS, founded in 1921, is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students and serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
The CHS Chapter of the NHS is co-advised by Mr. Scott Brown and Mr. Rob Mizen. The Feb. 10 ceremony included opening remarks from both Brown and Mizen with Lacey Jacobs, CHS guidance counselor, featured as the guest speaker. New student officers were introduced for 2020-21, and the high school’s Chamber Ensemble Choir beautifully performed “Bridge Over Troubled Water” under the direction of Fritz Streiff.
For a full listing of both newly inducted and current NHS members, as well as 2019-20 and 2020-21 officers, visit the News page at www.chardonschools.org.
Senior Receives Scholarship Surprise
Chardon High School senior Victor “Vito” Rosace received big news during multivariable calculus class on Feb. 6 when Susan Kosakowski, the undergraduate recruiting coordinator for Bowling Green State University’s College of Business, made a surprise visit to announce Rosace’s acceptance into BGSU’s College of Business and award him a $1,000 scholarship. The scholarship, one of only 10 of its kind, is part of Bowling Green’s faculty ambassador program.
CHS business teacher Allen Herner serves as a liaison to the BGSU College of Business, and Chardon students who are accepted into the program are eligible for the scholarship.
