Junior High Science Olympiad
During the March regular meeting of the board of education, the Berkshire Junior High Science Olympiad team members showed everyone their science projects that they entered in the Science Olympiad competitions this winter. The categories were Crime Busters, Experimental Design, Heredity, Mousetrap Vehicle and Write It/Do It.
Congratulations to students Jack Squire, Logan Byler, Nick Romask, Nathan McFadden, Ellen Adams and Molly Emig. The parents who coached the students are also commended for their time and effort.
A Day of Pi
On March 14, the fifth and sixth-grade students learned about pi in their math classes and then celebrated Pi Day eating various pies. The students learned about the history of pi and how it was determined, specifically that a circle’s circumference is approximately three times the diameter of the circle, which is pi or 3.14159.
The students then measured various sized circles and discussed the relevance of pi to measurement and math. They concluded the lessons and activities by eating various types of pie. The day was well organized and complete with student-centered activities.
Thank you to Mrs. Duns, sixth-grade math teacher, Miss O’Connor, fifth and sixth-grade intervention math teacher, and Miss Vance, fifth-grade math teacher, for their efforts in planning and implementing the lessons that were engaging and made math fun.
