Happiness Grows in Giving Garden
Every third grader at Timmons Elementary School was given a cabbage seedling to grow at home in April as part of a contest sponsored by the Kenston High School Giving Garden Club. Students then submitted pictures, and Elliott Ball was selected as the winner. Thank you to Bonnie Plants for donating the cabbage plants for the contest.
Kenston High School’s Giving Garden Club was started in 2019 with the mission to foster an appreciation for the outdoors, connect with the community through the donation of fresh produce and provide hands-on experience in gardening and resource conservation. The service club cares for three gardens: the vegetable gardens on the southeast corner of KHS, the butterfly garden on the north side of KHS, and the sensory garden for students with special needs located near the main entrance at KHS.
The club is active from April through October and during harvest season, members deliver tomatoes, squash, peppers, garlic, potatoes, kale, green beans, cucumbers and onions to local food pantries. The club uses organic gardening principles, experiments with companion planting, collects rainwater, composts plant waste from the school kitchen and grows a few new plants every season. They appreciate the community’s support and donations of garden tools, mulch, compost, plants, irrigation supplies and farm tours.
Buses Back on the Road
As school buses return to the road, the Kenston Schools and Bainbridge Police Department remind motorists of the rules of the road. When one sees the flashing red lights activated on the school bus on any two-lane roadway in the community, all traffic must come to a complete stop until the lights are turned off.
Anyone found violating the law can be issued a citation with a required court appearance in Chardon Municipal Court. It could include a fine of up to $500 and possible license suspension.
Kenston Conversations
Join Superintendent Steve Sayers to share a cup of coffee and conversation about Kenston Schools at the following first semester’s sessions of Kenston Conversations. The first session will be from 9-10 a.m. Aug. 28 in the Gardiner Center conference room.
