Buddy Reading

Students in Ms. Edwards’ third-grade class and Mrs. Wichert’s first-grade class collaborated to foster engaging academic and social-emotional learning opportunities. The students buddy up monthly to build their reading confidence as they practice their reading fluency and comprehension and celebrate reading together.

On Oct. 27, teachers chose a purposeful read-aloud that reinforced science learning and shared a message that coincides with the district’s PEAK character traits. Ms. Edwards shared that this provides authentic learning opportunities in a positive learning environment and provides support for all readers. Partnering together across grade levels on integrated and related standards motivates and builds success for all levels of readers and learners. Mrs. Wichert shared her students have become more confident readers through this program.

Pumpkin Math

Students in Mr. Suba’s and Mrs. Dixon’s third-grade classes had a hands-on math lesson this fall. The classes used pumpkins to predict the weight, circumference and number of seeds before discovering the exact measurements. Next, they will use the data collected for each group to compare the size of pumpkins to the number of seeds. Finally, they will create addition and subtraction problems from the data as well as graphing the data as well.

Five-Year Forecast

At the Oct. 16 board meeting, the Kenston Board of Education approved the five-year forecast and related assumptions for the general fund, which is both a short-term and long-term projection of the district’s finances. Treasurer Seth Cales annually submits the forecast and assumptions to the Ohio Department of Education by Nov. 30 and May 31. A revised five-year forecast may be submitted anytime during the year if and when substantial changes occur that affect the projections.

The five-year forecast is a snapshot in time and is only as accurate as the information that was available at the time it was prepared. The five-year forecast is prepared utilizing historical trends and realistic assumptions.

The primary purpose of the forecast:

  • A planning tool for the district’s board of education and administration to use to identify and prepare for future funding issues of the district in support of its mission and vision.
  • A key tool in meeting the district’s priority is to respect the investment of taxpayers by providing responsible management of resources as we continue our commitment to student success.
  • To serve as a basis for determining the treasurer’s ability to certify that funds are available when entering into contracts.
  • To provide a method for the Ohio Department of Education and the Auditor of State to identify districts headed toward financial difficulties.

Highlights of the October 2023 Five-Year Forecast:

  • The five-year forecast was constructed for what is known at this point in time, with reasonable certainty.
  • The five-year forecast did not factor in the PI Levy or the rightsizing plan as Kenston does not know the outcome of the PI Levy or the exact impact of the rightsizing plan yet.
  • House Bill 187, passed by the House and sent to the Senate, which uses a three-year average for re-evaluating property values, was used in the assumptions of the forecast (this was used due to the messaging of the likely passing of House Bill 187 and also because it is the more conservative approach related to revenues).
  • The five-year forecast projects continued deficit spending throughout the forecast with an ending cash balance of $2.6 million for fiscal year 2027 and a negative cash balance for fiscal year 2028 (a negative cash balance is prohibited, as board policy dictates we must have at least 30 days cash on hand, and would require an operating levy prior to going negative).

Please contact Treasurer Seth Cales with any questions. Past forecasts and assumptions are posted on the district’s Finance page at kenstonlocal.org.
