Bus Driver Safety Road-E-O

School bus drivers throughout Ohio participate in regional road-e-o competitions each spring that are designed to test and increase their operational and safety skills. Top participants at each regional road-e-o move on to compete at the state-level competition. Participants who score 80 percent or more of the total possible points at a regional or state competition may use that event toward their six-year recertification.

Kenston drivers Roger Rodhe, Linda Murphy, Mellony Salsgiver and David Staudenbauer placed second out of 66 teams. Individuals placing in the top 10 were: Mellony Salsgiver, third place; Chrissy Quigley, fifth place and Kaylee Clayman, ninth place.

The top six drivers at each regional qualify to compete at the state road-e-o, which was held May 6. Winners from the state go on to an international event in July.

Outstanding Educator Award

Kenston Middle School teacher Abra Schweickert was selected as the Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator from State Support Team 4 representing Lake and Geauga counties. Mrs. Schweickert’s passion for teaching and positive outlook lends itself to encouraging her students to achieve at their highest level.

Her multi-age resource room has many initiatives that allow her students to become independent learners including developing and staffing the concession stand and School Supply Shop, working on like skill jobs within the building and establishing a Peer Buddy program with typical peers. Her students feel a sense of pride and succeed because of her efforts.

Outstanding Achievement Award

Senior Jamie Rondo has been selected for a RA Horn Outstanding Achievement Award by State Support Team 4 representing Lake and Geauga counties. Jamie participates in the Transitional Options program, learning real world work skills to better prepare him for future employment. He is a positive role model in the Creating Exceptional Character (CEC) program at Kenston High School where he spreads awareness for all students with disabilities and encourages inclusion. Jamie’s positive attitude puts a smile on the faces of his classmates and staff at school.
