Speech and Debate Update
Before winter break, Kenston Middle School students competed at the Vermilion Tournament. In Public Forum, Peter Como and Brett King placed first. In Big Questions Debate, Jacob Gertsburg placed second and Nathan Rolf placed fourth. In Interpretation, Chloe Hebert placed seventh, Alexa Hebert placed 10th and Sophia Alandt placed 11th.
Kenston hosted its annual speech and debate tournament on Dec. 21. Twenty-four schools attended, 37 Kenston students competed, and 26 of those students placed in the top seven of their event. Kenston had its best debate results ever, with Okan Kardzhala placing first in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Nicolas Sanchez placing first and Laura Parsons and Micah Greenberg placing fifth in Big Questions Debate, and Stephen Kale and Avery Steinberg placing fifth in Public Forum Debate. In Congressional Debate, Samantha Stephens placed second, Ryann Greulich placed third, Devin Cinch placed fifth and Colin Varga took sixth place.
Kenston did great in the speech events too. Kylee Pierson placed first and Anthony Alandt took third in Declamation. Eden Truax earned third honors in Dramatic Interpretation. In Progam Oral. Skylar Cinch took fourth in Humorous Interpretation. Placing seventh were Hayley Sharp in Original Oratory and Cadence Matty in Declamation.
From Kenston Middle School, Peter Como and Brett King placed first in Public Forum Debate for the second tournament in a row. In Big Questions Debate, Jacob Gertsburg placed second and Madelyn Foerster placed sixth in her first tournament ever. In Interpretation, Chloe Hebert placed fifth and Sophia Alandt placed seventh.
Class of ‘24 Parent Meeting
The transition between middle school and high school will begin for the parents of eighth-graders at the incoming freshman parent meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 16 in the Kenston High School, Robert A. Lee Auditorium. The first informative evening will focus on course selection and scheduling for next year. Representatives from the high school administration, guidance and academic departments will be available to answer specific questions.
Kindergarten Parent Meeting
Information night for incoming kindergarten parents will be held at Timmons Elementary School on Jan. 27 at 6:45 p.m. for children entering kindergarten in August. Children must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 30, 2020. Information about kindergarten and the registration process will be shared at this event.
Kindergarten registration will be held on Feb. 4 from 8-10:30 a.m. and 4:30-7 p.m. at Timmons Elementary School. Please complete registration online by Feb. 3 and bring supporting documentation along for copying (school will make copies) and a calendar to sign up for kindergarten screening.
Zoo Crew
Timmons Elementary School’s third-graders who work hard and show great effort were named to the Zoo Crew. Members of the Zoo Crew are rewarded with goofy and crazy games and activities before school each week for eight weeks.

Emergency School Closing
In case of severe weather or calamity requiring school to be closed, an official announcement will be made via an AlertNow phone call to the homes of families with children attending the Kenston Schools. If one is uncertain about school closing, call 440-564-2134 or login to www.kenstonlocal.com for up-to-date information.
The message is updated by 5:30 a.m. when conditions warrant. If school is closed due to weather, all activities and athletic contests are cancelled whether home or away.
Gold Cards Available
All residents of Auburn and Bainbridge who are 60 years of age or older may obtain a free, lifetime “gold card,” which will admit them free of charge to any school-sponsored event in which students participate, including home athletic events, musical and dramatic performances.
Gold cards are not valid when an event is sponsored by an organization other than the schools (P.T.O., Booster groups, etc.) as a fundraiser. The gold card cannot be used for athletic events such as conference, regional or state playoffs.
Gold card membership can be obtained at the Kenston Board Office, 17419 Snyder Road.
Hall of Fame Nominations
The Kenston Alumni Association is seeking nominations for the second class of Distinguished Hall of Fame inductees. The individuals will be graduates or staff members who have achieved success in their careers and have made significant contributions in their fields as well as to society. Inductees will have graduated or worked at Auburn, Bainbridge or Kenston schools.
To be eligible, nominees must have graduated in the Class of 2010 or before, or retired or left the school system by June 1, 2010, or before, and not currently be employed by Kenston.
A panel of Kenston High School students, alumni, teachers, community members and administrators will select the inductees for the Distinguished Hall of Fame. Selections will be based on nominations and information received from friends, families and the individuals themselves.
The inductees will be honored during the Kenston 2020 Homecoming activities. For nomination forms, visit www.kenstonlocal.org. Deadline for nominations is Feb. 28.
Football Reverse Raffle
The Bomber Elite Football Club will host a reverse raffle with a grand prize of $3,000 on Feb. 29 from 6-11 p.m. at Bertram Inn. Tickets are $165 per couple.
