Nathan Spencer has been selected Kenston’s Chagrin Valley Rotary Club Student of the Month in December. He maintains a 4.321-grade point average. Nathan scored a perfect 36 on his ACT. He has twice earned the Presidential Award for academics and community service. Academics have been his main focus, maintaining all A’s are receiving academic awards in biology and American history.

As a Math Club and marching band member, Nathan has selected activities that surround him with classmates who share similar interests. He plays trumpet as a member of the concert and jazz band. He gives back to the community as a member of the National Honor Society.

Nathan is undecided about his college decision. He plans to attend a four-year university and major in mathematics and possibly minor in film.

Speech and Debate Update

Kenston High School hosted a virtual tournament on Dec. 19 with 33 schools participating.

Kenston’s own Samantha Stephens was crowned tournament champion in Congressional Debate.

Also placing for KHS were Eden Truax, who came in fourth place in Declamation, Colin Varga who came in fifth place in Congressional Debate. Ella Jewell came in seventh place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate with a 3-1 record. The high school team placed sixth.

From Kenston Middle School, going undefeated with a 4-0 record and placing third was Nathan Rolf in Extemporaneous Debate, debating topics as diverse as whether daylight savings time should be eliminated, to whether beauty pageants for children should be banned, or whether college athletes should be paid and if the wall between the United States and Mexico should continue to be built. Also placing for KMS were Kherington Swader, second Congressional Debate; Marin Carlson, fourth Declamation; Piper Noda, fourth Interpretation; and Kate Tobin, seventh Interpretation.

The team continues to prepare for the state tournament, which will be held virtually in March.

Production Award Finalist

Junior Zoe Doyle was named a national finalist in the public service announcement (PSA) category of the National Student Production Awards for “How to Avoid Phishing Scams,” a piece she created in her digital media class.

Patriotism Essay Winners

Students in Mrs. Jeanine Domonkos’ eighth-grade creative writing classes participated in Chardon VFW Auxiliary Post 6519’s “What Patriotism Means to Me” essay contest.

Sara Studer earned first place honors. Second place was awarded to Jessica Brill, with Daniela Lioudis receiving third place recognition.
