Ohio Gold, Excellence in PE
Timmons Elementary School has been awarded gold level recognition from the Ohio Gold, Excellence in Physical Education program. Physical education teachers submitted curricular materials including lesson plans and a detailed questionnaire to be considered for the award. Timmons Elementary School has been recognized with this honor for four consecutive years. Physical education teachers Jeff George and Chris Maistros will be honored at the annual conference in December.
Salute to Veterans
Veterans were celebrated by third-graders at Timmons Elementary School. Annually, students invite parents, grandparents or a special friend who has served in the military to share stories about military life and their branch of the service. Guest speakers often bring military mementos to share.
Students honored the veterans by performing military and patriotic songs.
Amazingly Accurate
Physics students in Mr. Christian Barrus’ classes know that the wavelength of light cannot be measured directly – it’s simply too small and too fast. But when light from a laser passes through a diffraction grating, which looks like a slide but has thousands of slits in it, the light makes a repeating pattern that can be interpreted and measured. This lab allowed students to calculate the wavelength of light with fantastic accuracy (within about 1 percent) using only a meter stick and protractor. The diffraction of light is considered proof that light acts as a wave.
Speech and Debate
The Kenston High School Speech and Debate team placed fifth out of 19 schools at the Laurel Schools Tournament.
Individual trophies were earned by Jessica Sunderhaft, who placed first in Program Oral Interpretation. Morgan Spehar placed second in Informative Speaking. Laura Parsons earned fifth place honors in Dramatic Interpretation in her first ever speech tournament. Megan Herbruck and Savannah Georgian were recognized with a fifth place in Duo Interpretation. Rory McBrady placed sixth in Original Oratory.
