Robotics Team Competes

The Newbury Black Knights Robotics Team participated in the Cleveland Area FIRST Technical Challenge Qualifying Tournament held at Cuyahoga Community College on Jan. 6.

There were 28 teams present, each competing in a round-robin tournament and each match of which pits two randomly selected teams called the Red Alliance against two other teams, the Blue Alliance. The teams attempt to dislodge balls of the other alliance’s color, stack foam cubes into patterns, balance on teetering platforms and park in specific areas on the competition floor.

The first season for Black Knights Robotics is 2017-2018, and the team is young, consisting of sophomore Charlie Houser, freshmen Alex Hammonds and A.J. Rogers and eighth-grader Brandon Pike.

Over the last several months, these four have built and programmed their robot and practiced guiding it through its assigned tasks during both autonomous and human-operated phases with the guidance and assistance of coaches Angela McFadden and Steve Ingrassia. The team has concluded its competition season for the year and will now concentrate on designing new features that allow even more efficient movement and manipulation capabilities.

The 2018-2019 season challenge will be announced in September and the team can hardly wait to see what their next mission will be.
