HPAC Students Stay Healthy
On April 26, ten Newbury High School HPAC students attended Hiram College’s Health Fest. They attended various interactive sessions to learn more about health-related careers. They went on hikes, learned stress relief tactics, saw cadavers and watched demos on using an AED, taking vitals and starting an IV. They got to visit many buildings on campus and eat in the dining hall. It was a wonderful and eventful day.
Spanish Students Visit Museum
On April 27, the Newbury High School Spanish students from the classes of Spanish III, IV, V and VI took a field trip to the Cleveland Museum of Art to view the great Spanish artists and artwork from the ancient times to more modern day creations. Led by teacher Tom Pokorny, the students viewed medieval art from the time of El Cid, Moorish art from the same time period since they ruled
Spain for 700 years, to the great Spanish masters from the Golden Age of Spanish art including Velazquez, El Greco, Goya and Murillo. Spain’s Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali were among the more modern day artwork viewed.
An excursion through the knight’s gallery proved to be a favorite, especially seeing knight’s armor from the time of El Cid. The students then had additional time to view the Egyptian art along with all of the preparations involved with the mummies. A final stop in the museum involved contemporary video and the giant computer wall showcasing all of the artwork throughout the museum.
The group then traveled to Chipotle’s Mexican Grill for lunch and headed home after a rewarding trip.
YSU English Festival
For the second year in a row, Newbury students in grades 7-12 participated in the annual Youngstown State University English Festival held April 18 and 20. In order for students to attend the festival, they have read the seven books required by the English Festival administrators.
At the festival, the students are put into groups with hundreds of other students from schools all around the area; however, Newbury is the only school from Geauga County invited to the festival. Once in their groups, students participated in all sorts of English related activities such as poetry writing, novel trivial pursuit and impromptu essay writing.
They also get the opportunity to meet some of the authors of the required readings. This year, Laurie Halse Anderson, Chris Crutcher and Kekla Magoon were the featured authors.
All the students who attended had a great time visiting the YSU campus and participating in the festival. They look forward to next year’s book list to begin the fun all over again.
