The Newbury High School choir performed at the OMEA State Choir Contest on April 28 at Highland High School in Medina.
OMEA State Concert
The Newbury High School choir performed at the OMEA State Choir Contest on April 28 at Highland High School in Medina. Newbury was the only school to represent Geauga County at the contest that included over 50 Cleveland-area high schools. The choir received a rating of “Excellent” from their adjudicators for their sight reading and overall performance.
Newbury’s final choir concert of the year will be held on May 17 at 7 p.m. in the Newbury auditorium.
Academic Team Accomplishments
The A team qualified for the 2017 NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament at the Comet Winter Clash Solon High School Tournament in February for being the top performing public small school.
In the Portage County Academic League, varsity placed fourth in the regular season overall and first for small schools. Individual accomplishments include: Mak Sanders – All League first team and third highest scorer; Sarah Stefancin – All League third team and 14th highest scorer; and Annie Kinkopf – junior varsity All-Star and ninth highest scorer JV.
Varsity placed third in the end of league tournament overall.
Varsity’s performance gave them a second bid to the 2017 NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament and a bid to the 2017 NAQT High School National Championship Tournament.
It is the fourth year Newbury High School has qualified for the small school national championship, which is every year the tournament has existed.
At the 2017 NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament in Chicago, Newbury placed 19th out of 96 teams overall and eighth out of the 50 Very Small Schools at the tournament.
Mak Sanders was in the top 16 of the preliminary rounds which led him to receive one of the tournament All-Star Awards and he finished 13th out of 533 participants that buzzed in to answer toss-up questions averaging 65.02 points per 20 toss-up questions heard.
Sarah Stefancin finished 130th and Kevin Piczer 283rd.
Varsity/A team members who went to Chicago include: Kevin Piczer, Sarah Stefancin, Jessica Perez, Mak Sanders, Max Plesmid, Alex Piczer, Hannah Lewandoski, Anne Kinkopf and Thomas Bond.
The junior varsity/B team that participated in the league and the Solon Tournament include: Caleb Ray, Charlie Houser, Grace Wright, Sarah MacPhearson, Christina Weber, Haley DeMeo, Sarah Perez and Anne Kinkop.
